DIFFERENT TYPES OF MEDIA

Despite being a music video, I looked at other types of media such as photography and film cinematography because I wanted my video to be aesthetic focused and artistic. The shots of the sky and close-ups of nature (such as the flowers) reflect this as well as my frequent use of shallow depth of field focus and rule of thirds that is often seen in photography. By doing this I moved away from the typical performance focus of (electro)pop videos and showed how my use of influence from real life media products has developed by looking at different types of media and how to adapt them to my project rather than only using conventions of one type of text.

TORODOV'S NARRATIVE THEORY

I mentioned before that I used the steps in Goodwin's theory of music videos to form my own products, however I developed my use of theory further as I also looked at film theories too rather than just ones specific to music videos. One of these was Torodov's narrative theory, which was relevant due to my video's main feature being a narrative with characters and a clear progression of a story. However, due to the non-linear nature of the story (as it is mostly told in flashbacks), I also challenged this theory by subverting the typical progression that Torodov suggested: equilibrium, disruption, recognition, repair, new equilibrium. Instead, mine started with the recognition as Rhi (in the present) looks back to the past after her break up before it moves to equilibrium in the flashbacks by showing the beginning of that relationship. While the flashbacks are mostly linear as each verse shows a different stage in that relationship (and the progression of it), the cuts back to the present (in the chorus) keep the video as a whole on a non-linear path. The videos does, however, end at a new equilibrium as the two girls reunite.

DIGIPAK PHOTOGRAPHY

My digipak front cover was created using a double exposure effect, which is a popular technique that is mostly seen in photography but also made popular when the TV show True Detective used it in their opening titles. However, I developed this idea to suit my needs and to more effectively tie into the genre of my artist. Double exposure photography often ends up being black and white, or some degree of greyscale. This makes it look more imposing and impressive, as well as blending the images together more effectively than having two colours that clash from the different images used. Instead of going along with these conventional ideas, I instead made my double exposure picture extremely colourful and bright to not only be eye catching, but to also reflect the upbeat nature of electropop music. Doing this also allowed me to form synergy between my products, as the colourful images of the sky on my digipak linked to the backgrounds of the pages of the website, an also the double exposure- type technique that I used in the chorus of- and throughout- my music video. Therefore developing the conventions of this type of photography allowed me to not just beter suit my needs in terms of synergy, but create a more eye-catching and vibrant product that would appeal to the target audience of young people more.
